There are actually many reasons why a city has to be abandoned: war, natural disasters, climate change and the loss of important trading partners to name a few. Too cool to believe, you have to see it to believe it! Use Google Earth and fly to Derinkuyu Underground City, Turkey. Located in the modern-day city of Cappadocia, this is a pretty wild story!

2. Historical Sites of the Holocaust A)Located about 70 miles from the city of Krakow, Poland is a place of unspeakable horror! Above the entrance to this infamous place is a chilling sign with the following words in German: "Arbeit Macht Frei" .
Do some research to discover what this sign means and what the name of this site is. Why do you think this message was put on the entrance to this site? Make sure to include this information in your Travel Documentary notes!
Fly to these coordinates 50.027606°N 19.203088°E to arrive at the entrance gate and get a screen shot of the gate at street view for your travel journal. This is only a graphic so you may want to grab a copy of an actual photo using Panoramio as well. Then exit Ground Level View.
Zoom out until you can see this entire compound. Use your mouse to hover over different buildings until you find one labeled "Crematorium and Chimney" (be sure you have the 360 cities layer turned ON -under the "Photos" layer--this layer icon looks like a red square)! B) Let's visit the house of one of the most famous victims of the Holocaust. Fly to Anne Frank's house to learn how one brave teenager outsmarted the Nazi's for a while. Once there, please answer the following questions:

This city is known for it's canal system and waterways. What is the name of the waterway directly in front of the house? (Hint: Turn off the "Photos" layer and zoom out until you see the name appear. Go to this website: Anne Frank House Virtual Tour Then using the navigation tabs at the top of the website, click on the "Who is Who" And/OR "The Outcome" tabs and watch at least 3 short videos to learn about the those who hid in this house. Make sure to plug in some headphones (from Ms. Frachetti) to listen to the videos/podcasts! Record at least 3 interesting facts you learn in your Travel log notes.

C)So many people ask "Why didn't the Jews fight back during the Holocaust"? Actually, they did! During the evacuation of the Jews to the extermination camps, there was a valiant effort to stop the trains moving the Jews from their homes to the camps. History remembers this as The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Fly to “Warsaw Ghetto, Poland” and use street view to take a screenshot of the monument in front of the “Monument to the Ghetto Heroes” for use in your travel journal.

C)Skeleton Lake of Roopkund, Uttarakhand, India. Fly to this location and be sure to turn on the Photos-Panoramio layer. Open several Panoramio photos until you find one with skeletons in it--yikes!. Grab a photo for your Travel Journal and an aerial screen shot of the lake. Then open the full Wikipedia article and answer the following questions:
What is another name for this lake? Describe where it is located (altitude, type of terrain, climate, mountain range, etc.0
How many skeletons were found in this lake and about how old are these remains. What do scientists believe caused the death of so many people and how did their remains end up in the lake?

D)The Hindu religion is prominent in Southern India and well-known for its temples. One of the most amazing is the Murudeshwara temple in Karnataka. This temple is built on the Kanduka Hill which is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Sea. Type this temple name into Google Earth fly-to box and zoom in until you see the temple at the edge of the peninsula.
What life size animals guard the entrance? To discover this, you will need to go to the street view of this building.
Murudeshwar is another name for what Hindu god? What is unique about the look of this god?
This temple has a 20-story gopuram. What is a gopuram and where would you find more of them?
E)In the city of Kumbhalgarhyou will find the great Kumbhalgarh Fort which was built during 15th century by Maharana Kumbha. This fort is almost invincible. It took the combined armies of Delhi, Amber and Marwar to breach its defenses. Thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravali Range protect this fortress. Seven huge and imposing gates stand like guards as you approach. This wall is second longest only to the 'Great Wall of China'. This grand fort also has 360 temples within the walls. The wall for this fortress is not in a regular straight pattern but it runs through mountain cliffs and valleys. It has steep ascend and descend throughout its length the wall has stairs and walk way which is evident from the photographs. The wall runs through the forest area which falls under Kumbhalgarh National Park. This national park is rich with a great variety of flora and fauna. It is famous for panthers and leopards. Other wild life in this national park is Hyena, Toddy cats, Wolf, Chansinga, Neelgai, Sambhars, Crocodiles, Grey Jungle fowl, Peacocks, Wild boars, Beers etc.
Choose one of the above animals that is unfamiliar to you. Find a picture and four interesting facts about the animal to include in your journal.
Fly to 25 08 58N 73 34 50E. This will take you to the top of the Fort (home base for the wall). Zoom down to an eye altitude of about 3700 feet. Using the street view, drop in on the center of the fort and take a scenic picture to include in your travel journal.
F)In a tiny corner in north-west Poland near the city of Gryfino, is a forest of about 400 pine trees that grow with a 90 degree bend at the base of their trunks, before rising vertically again. This collection of curved trees has been named the "Crooked Forest". How wierd!!
What direction are the trees bent toward?
Why are they bent at all? Who did this? What did they plan to do with the trees?
Go to Google and search for "latitude and longitude of the Crooked Forest in Poland. Copy the latitude and longitude and paste it into the FlyTo in Google Earth. Zoom out until you can see the entire forest and take a screenshot. Include this and one of the Panaramio pictures of the actual trees.

G) Pink Bunny, Artesina, Italy Just east of Artesina, Italy, it is rumored you will find a PINK abnormally large hare. Yes, a very large pink bunny!
Who made this artifact, what is it made of and why on earth would anyone do this? In order to find this information, you will have to access the Wikipedia article located near the bunny.
What do experts expect will become of this art piece?
Fly to "Artesina, Italy" and navigate to the east (and a bit south) and you will see the bunny. Take a screenshot of the hill with the bunny on it and include it in your travel journal.

A)Located in Wiltshire, England, this ancient site known as Stonehenge is considered to be one of the world's most mysterious places. Fly to this location and be sure to get an aerial screen shot of this site as well as a street view. B)Fly to the mysterious Easter Island. There you will find enormous stone statues built by the ancient peoples who once inhabited the island.
First, open ONLY the following Google Earth layers: (3-D buildings, Photo Realistic, More--Local Place names and Wikipedia). Make sure the Photos layer is off at firs. Then open the Wikipedia article on Easter island and answer the following questions.
- Get an aerial screen shot of this unique island for your travel journal. What modern country does this island belong to?
Next, open the Wikipedia article labeled "Moai" and answer these questions:C)Skeleton Lake of Roopkund, Uttarakhand, India. Fly to this location and be sure to turn on the Photos-Panoramio layer. Open several Panoramio photos until you find one with skeletons in it--yikes!. Grab a photo for your Travel Journal and an aerial screen shot of the lake. Then open the full Wikipedia article and answer the following questions:
- What is another name for this lake? Describe where it is located (altitude, type of terrain, climate, mountain range, etc.0
- How many skeletons were found in this lake and about how old are these remains. What do scientists believe caused the death of so many people and how did their remains end up in the lake?

D)The Hindu religion is prominent in Southern India and well-known for its temples. One of the most amazing is the Murudeshwara temple in Karnataka. This temple is built on the Kanduka Hill which is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Sea. Type this temple name into Google Earth fly-to box and zoom in until you see the temple at the edge of the peninsula.
E)In the city of Kumbhalgarhyou will find the great Kumbhalgarh Fort which was built during 15th century by Maharana Kumbha. This fort is almost invincible. It took the combined armies of Delhi, Amber and Marwar to breach its defenses. Thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravali Range protect this fortress. Seven huge and imposing gates stand like guards as you approach. This wall is second longest only to the 'Great Wall of China'. This grand fort also has 360 temples within the walls. The wall for this fortress is not in a regular straight pattern but it runs through mountain cliffs and valleys. It has steep ascend and descend throughout its length the wall has stairs and walk way which is evident from the photographs. The wall runs through the forest area which falls under Kumbhalgarh National Park. This national park is rich with a great variety of flora and fauna. It is famous for panthers and leopards. Other wild life in this national park is Hyena, Toddy cats, Wolf, Chansinga, Neelgai, Sambhars, Crocodiles, Grey Jungle fowl, Peacocks, Wild boars, Beers etc.
F)In a tiny corner in north-west Poland near the city of Gryfino, is a forest of about 400 pine trees that grow with a 90 degree bend at the base of their trunks, before rising vertically again. This collection of curved trees has been named the "Crooked Forest". How wierd!!
